foreword

As you glance through this book in years to come, I hope you may recall some of the
pleasant memories students at Phillips High have shared together.

The sound of happy voices, the spirit of good sports, the molding of ideals and of noble
ambitions - all blend into our high school experiences.

With sincere hopes of bringing a worthy souvenir of these significant days at Phillips to
its many loyal students, the Staff has devoted many hours of work.

We feel that your satisfaction with the volume is our compensation, and with this thought
the Staff presents the 1954 "Bulldog. "

'Dedication

The Senior Class dedicates this volume of the 1954 BULLDOG to Miss Dorothy B.
Hammonds, our English instructor. We wish to express by this small gesture our appre-
ciation for her untiring efforts in our behalf.

So to you. Miss Hammonds, who have given us your service, we dedicate our year-
book. We will fondly treasure memories of you ---our friend, counselor, and teacher.

A Mouquet of Koses

Through the overcast of heavy fog many little children came into view
as the bus fleet unloaded its cargo one November morning at one small
rural school. Completely unmindful of my observation from the car
window they scampered up the walkr Running, jumping, playing, yell-
ing, laughing, and pulling, they came! The group made a mad rush
for the school buildings!

The scene reminded one of the dawn of intelligence. From the car
window this unusual society of human beings made an interesting study
in behavior. The new and strange world around the children produced
for each a different problem. Some of them found it a highly interest-
ing and exciting place filled with the countless mysteries, others
insecure and afraid, could not make up their minds as to the friendliness
of so many things and events!

Through the doors they ran, and into the school to their teachers,
carrying with them their first impressions of the strange world demand-
ing decision from their young minds.

To the educational staff of administrators, teachers, health workers,
guidance officers, supervisors, maintenance workers, supply officers,
parents, business men, government agencies, and friends who daily
labor to assure such youngsters that this is a friendly world. . . that there
are certain rules that govern its operation. . . that these can be mastered
by patience and study. . . that there is a useful place for each person in
this wonderful world of living things. . . that hope and beauty, a part
of every living human, crying out for fulfillment, will not be denied. . .

To all who labor in the task of aiding these young minds dawning into
intelligence. The Staff of The Bull Dog gives a Bouquet of Roses. . .
a token of appreciation from ourselves, and indeed, from all civiliza-
tion forever!

Superintendent 's Message

GREETINGS to the 19$k graduates of Phillips High School. Sincere
congratulations on your many achievements. You are to be commended for
making this 19$h book of remembrance. It is something that you will enjoy
and cherish for many years to come. I congratulate you, seniors, for
your having stayed in school and having finished twelve years of school
work. With this accomplishment goes the responsibility of citizenship and
helpfulness in all your future activities.

This is not a farewell note— we expect to hear about your success in
life and future attainments. We will need your help in building a better
world and hope that the Edgecombe County Schools may in time be a bless-
ing to you.

Very cordially yours,

Principal's Message

Genius is only the power of making continuous efforts. The line between
failure and success is so fine that we scarcely know when we pass it; so fine
that we are often on the line and do not know it. A little more persistence,
a little more effort, and what seemed to d e a hopeless failure may turn into
glorious success.

There is no failure except in no longer trying. There is no defeat except
from within, no really impossible barrier except our own weakness of purpose.

This fine annual is a wonderful record of your school activities and
achievements, and it points to a student body that has intense pride in its
school.

As the years go by you will refer to this book many times, and will with
pride show it to the next generation. It is a privilege to commend each of
you, who has contributed in any way, to this project and wish for each of you
represented in it continued happiness and success.

Class Will

The graduating class of 1954, realized the close of their high school days were near at hand, and
therefore thought it wise to leave something to those who will fill their places in the future.

In the course of our high school days, naturally, we have accumulated various and valuable posses-
sions; we have acquired a vast store of knowledge, along with other things that will help us through life.
Since the excess possessions are somewhat burdensome, we should like to pass on to our successors some
of our valuable assets. The underclassmen, expecially the Juniors, would be handicapped if we took
with us all our valuables.

To our faithful principal, Mr. CM. Carraway, we leave our heartfelt gratitude for the patience he has

had in leading us to our goal.
To our sponsor, Mrs. Carraway, to whom we are very much indebted for her leadership and guidance, we

leave our best wishes that she may have more happiness and success with her future classes.
For our teachers who are our friends, we sincerely hope that the oncoming classes will be more willing

to abide by the rules and regulations .
To the following individuals we bequeath these:
Dorothy Battle wills her ability to flirt to Lucille Bunn.

Lesterine Battle wills her citizenship ability and place in the Glee Club to Vernetta Exum.
Evelyn Boddie wills her four years service in the library to anyone having the patience to remain so long,
.^uth Bunn wills her shyness to Sadie Harper.
Alice Burgess wills her quietness to Lucille Alston.

Mildred Cofield wills her neatness, reading ability and a large collection of books she possesses to
Maxine Yates.

Bessie Dancy wills her co-operativeness, manners and dramatic ability to Mary Shelly.

Elmarie Dancy wills her pleasing personality to Carrie Batts.

Minnie Davis wills her neatness and sewing ability to Dezeretta Exum.

Roxie Dickens wills to Marjorie Battle her determination to finish high school.

Ella Whitehead wills her shorthand ability to Yvonne West.

Charles Lyons wills his neatness to Edward McLean.

James Lyons and John Odom will their ability to try to win the girls to Derry Vaughn.

Roosevelt Lyons wills his shortness to William Staton.

Neil McLean wills his speaking ability to William Hilliard.

To Paul Hunter, James Parker wills his position as president of the Student Council; his achievements as

a good citizen; and his music and dramatic talents.

Joe Parker wills his height to Willie Dupree.

Oliver Parker wills his baby talk to Fred Hilliard.

Woodrow Parker wills his singing ability to Claude Draughn.

Molester Foxworth wills his athletic and poetical ability to William Hilliard.

Columbus Horton and Junius Cofield will their ability to drive carefully to Willie Dupree and Derry
Vaughn.

Jesse Daniels leaves his scientific ability to William Staton.
Tim Battle wills his ability to drive carefully to Roscoe Dickens.

Johnnie Bellamy wills his ability to pass his courses without studying to William Monroe.
Yvonne Wade wills to Lillian Gunter her height, typing, and Mathematical abilities.
Vivian Odessa Young wills her musical talent and her ability to imitate her English instructor to
Lillian Cofield.

Mary Draughn wills her neatness to Mary Burgess.

Mary Draughn wills to Reba Daniels her 4-H Club ability.

Annie Footman and Mary Johnson will their historical ability to Edna Lawrence and Annie Battle.
Nellie Hill wills her beautiful hair styles to Annie Hilliard.
Mildred Hall wills her senior walk to Lillie Dawkins.
Clara Lyons wills her athletic ability to Willa Monroe.
Sadie Powell wills her talkative ways to Eva Bryant.

Elizabeth Spragley wills to Mamie Graham her neatly arranged hair styles.

Bessie Johnson would like to leave, that is graduate with the rest of her hopeful seniors.

We have not left all of our valuable assets, but we have tried to leave the ones which we feel may be

of great service to you in the future.
We, the class of 1954, the testators, have to this our will, written, and sealed this seventeenth day of

May, one thousand nine hundred and fifty four.

Class History

In August, 1950, the class of 1954 made its first appearance in high school. For nearly eight years
our aim was to reach this goal.

Our elementary teachers must have caught a glimpse of our aims, for they mustered all their efforts
to prepare us for this important step - entering high school. The great responsibility they had in teaching
a group of small boys and girls to read and write and to find their way around at school was not an easy
task. So to our elementary teachers a million thanks.

The 0nejiundred and forty six students whichmade up the Freshman class came from various schools:
Phillips, Whitakers, Inborden, and Coker. The class was divided into two sections under the supervision
of Mrs. Manning and Miss Hammonds. Time passed quickly and the class discovered that it had moved
one more step up the educational ladder. Mrs. Carraway became our homeroom teacher in our Sopho-
more year. Many of our classmates left us. This made the number dwindle from one hundred and forty
six members to eighty. Jesse Daniels was elected president of our class and Bessie Danny secretary

In the beginning of our Junior year, the class suffered another loss of members by the removal of
Halifax and Nash County students. They were lost because new buildings had been built for them in
their communities. The class continued under the leadership of Mrs. Carraway. James Parker was elect-
ed president of our class; Lesterine Battle, vice president; Yvonne Wade, secretary; and Nellie Hill,
treasurer.

During that year our school sponsored a contest which was called "A Big Hog Killing. " James Par-
ker, one of our classmates, was fortunate enough to be the winner of a hog. Our class also raised the
highest amount of money. Consequently the Junior Class won the contest.

The event that all of us looked forward to with much anticipation was the Junior-Senior Prom. This
was a very gala affair and will long be remembered by those who attended.

At last our senior year was reached. The fall of 1953 found us standing at the Threshold of gradu-
ation from high school. The organization of the class was as follows: Odessa Young, president; James
Parker, vice president; Yvonne Wade, secretary; and Nellie Hill, treasurer.

An outstanding venture of the Senior class was the publishing of a Phillips High School Annual.
Other activities in which the class engaged were the presentation of a Senior Class play and the prep-
aration for graduation.

Fond thanks to our parents and teachers for their guidance and encouragement during this period
of our development.

The last important high school event for this class will be the receiving of our diplomas.
